Chocolate Orange Cake

Ingredients
For the Cake:
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Chocolate Orange Frosting:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 2-3 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • Orange zest for garnish (optional)

Directions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the eggs. Add milk, vegetable oil, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until well combined and smooth.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  9. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, beating well after each addition.
  10. Add fresh orange juice, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
  11. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting evenly over the top.
  12. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  13. Garnish with orange zest, if desired.
